WhatsApp Gets a Big Payment Upgrade: Pay Electricity, Water, Gas and Other Bills Directly From the App
WhatsApp users in India have received a major new feature that could make paying everyday bills much easier. The Meta-owned messaging platform has introduced Bill Payments, allowing users to find, manage and pay several household and financial bills without leaving WhatsApp.
The new facility goes beyond WhatsApp's existing payment and mobile recharge capabilities. Users can now pay electricity and water bills, piped gas charges, FASTag dues, insurance premiums, credit card bills and loan repayments directly through the messaging app.
WhatsApp's Bill Payments service is powered by the Bharat Connect network, formerly known as the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS). According to Meta, the service connects users with 22,722 billers spread across 30 payment categories.
What Can You Pay Through WhatsApp?
The new feature is designed to bring frequently used payment services together inside one app.
Some of the major categories supported include:
- Electricity bills
- Water bills
- Piped gas bills
- FASTag payments
- Insurance premiums
- Credit card bills
- Loan repayments
The Bharat Connect integration means thousands of service providers can be accessed through the platform.
For users who already spend a significant amount of time on WhatsApp, this could reduce the need to move between separate apps for routine monthly payments.
How to Pay Bills Using WhatsApp
Using the new Bill Payments feature is designed to be straightforward.
First, open WhatsApp and tap the ₹ icon at the top of the home screen. From the Payments section, choose the type of bill you want to pay and then select the relevant service provider.
Next, enter and confirm the required customer or account details. WhatsApp can then fetch the bill information, allowing you to check the amount and other details before proceeding.
After reviewing the bill, choose an available payment method and complete the transaction. Meta says the feature supports UPI, debit cards and credit cards.
WhatsApp Can Also Show Upcoming Bills
The feature is not limited to making one-time payments.
WhatsApp says bills can be pre-fetched, while providers previously paid through Bill Payments can appear on the Payments Home screen for quicker access.
This could make recurring monthly payments easier because users may not have to search for the same service provider every time.
The app can also display upcoming bills and payment history, giving users a central location for managing routine payments.
Manage Home, Office and Family Bills in One Place
Another useful feature is support for multiple accounts under the same biller.
For example, if a person has two electricity connections with the same provider—one for their home and another for their office—they can manage both accounts through WhatsApp.
Similarly, users could potentially manage eligible accounts belonging to family members under the same service provider.
Frequently used bill categories will also appear prominently on Payments Home, while a See All option provides access to the wider list of supported categories.
Can You Recharge Mobile and FASTag Through WhatsApp?
WhatsApp already supports mobile recharge functionality, while the new Bill Payments expansion adds a much wider range of services.
FASTag is among the categories specifically included in the new bill-payment facility. Other supported services include utilities, insurance, credit card dues and loan repayments.
This means WhatsApp is gradually becoming more than a messaging and calling platform for Indian users, with several payment-related services now accessible from within the app.
Can't Find the Bill Payments Option?
Some users may open WhatsApp and find that the new feature is not yet available on their account.
That does not necessarily mean there is a problem with their phone or WhatsApp account.
Meta has confirmed that Bill Payments is being introduced gradually across India. The company says it will become available to Android and iOS users over the coming weeks.
Users who do not see the feature can keep WhatsApp updated and wait for the rollout to reach their account.
Why WhatsApp's New Feature Matters
Bill payments are among the most frequent digital transactions for Indian households. Consumers often use different apps or websites for electricity, water, gas, credit cards, FASTag and other recurring payments.
WhatsApp is attempting to bring many of these transactions into a single interface.
Users can communicate with family and businesses, make payments, recharge their phones and now manage a broader range of bills without repeatedly switching between apps.
The addition of Bharat Connect significantly expands the reach of this functionality by connecting WhatsApp with thousands of billers.
WhatsApp Bill Payments: Key Things to Remember
WhatsApp officially announced the Bill Payments feature for India on September 3, 2026. It covers 22,722 billers across 30 categories and supports major payments including electricity, water, gas, FASTag, insurance, credit card bills and loan repayments.
Users can access the service through the ₹ icon, select their biller, enter account information, review the fetched bill and complete payment using an available method such as UPI, debit card or credit card.
The feature is being rolled out in phases, so it may not immediately appear for every WhatsApp user.
For people who already use WhatsApp regularly, the update could make routine bill payments more convenient by bringing messaging and several everyday financial transactions together in the same app.
